Earned Media Wins HR Citations, Not Cybersecurity
Editorial sites win half the top AI citation ranks in HR and Talent and zero of the top six in Cybersecurity, per the current Machine Relations Index.
A marketing leader deciding whether an editorial placement program is worth the spend is usually asking one question with two different answers, depending on category. Does a press hit or a trade-publication feature move AI citations for the buying-decision content that matters — the "best tools" and "top list" answers a shortlist gets built from? In HR & Talent, yes, clearly. In Cybersecurity, no, not for those two shapes. This brief reads the split from the Machine Relations Index's own leaderboards, category by category and shape by shape.
What today's release publishes
Release mri_score_v2.0+2026-09-28+054b584266b8, generated 2026-09-28, observation window 2026-05-10 through 2026-09-28. Every cited domain in the Index carries a source-role label from its own declared taxonomy — editorial publication, vendor-owned, market and company database, academic and government, community and social, analyst and consulting research, or an unclassified "other observed source" bucket this brief reads for rank but does not compare as a class.
HR & Talent and Cybersecurity both publish all three shapes read here — best tools, top lists and the news-driven shape — clear of the evidence floor (at least 10 observed runs across at least 7 distinct dates): HR & Talent best tools at 107 runs across 7 dates, top lists at 99 runs across 7 dates, news-driven citations at 608 runs across 53 dates; Cybersecurity best tools at 105 runs across 8 dates, top lists at 130 runs across 7 dates, news-driven citations at 623 runs across 54 dates.
HR & Talent: editorial wins the buying shapes too
Reading the top six ranked sources on each HR & Talent shape:
| Shape | #1 | #2 | #3 | Editorial in top 6 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Best tools | Pin.com (vendor) | Selectsoftwarereviews.com (editorial) | Peoplemanagingpeople.com (editorial) | 3 of 6 |
| Top lists | Workforce.com (other) | Peoplemanagingpeople.com (editorial) | Gusto.com (vendor) | 3 of 6 |
| News-driven | Unleash.ai (editorial) | Landbase.com (vendor) | Crunchbase.com (market database) | 1 of 6 (3 of the top 8) |
Selectsoftwarereviews.com, Peoplemanagingpeople.com and Forbes hold ranked slots on both buying shapes, not just one. An editorial placement strategy built for HR & Talent buyers has a real, checkable path to citation on exactly the pages a shortlist comes from.
Cybersecurity: editorial is shut out of the buying shapes
The same read on Cybersecurity:
| Shape | #1 | #2 | #3 | Editorial in top 6 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Best tools | Huntress.com (vendor) | Sentinelone.com (vendor) | Cynet.com (vendor) | 0 of 6 |
| Top lists | Hoxhunt.com (other) | Adaptivesecurity.com (other) | Usecure.io (other) | 0 of 6 |
| News-driven | Paloaltonetworks.com (vendor) | Sentinelone.com (vendor) | Microsoft.com (vendor) | 0 of 6 (1 of the top 8) |
No editorial publication ranks inside the top six of either Cybersecurity buying shape. The first one to appear on best tools is Cybersecuritynews.com at rank 11 of 247, and on top lists it is PR Newswire at rank 28 of 264. Even on the news-driven shape, where Securityweek.com and Infosecurity-magazine.com do appear, the top of the leaderboard is still vendor-owned: Palo Alto Networks, SentinelOne, Microsoft and CrowdStrike hold four of the top five slots. Vendor-owned domains, not editorial coverage, are what a Cybersecurity buyer's AI answer is built from.
The pattern holds on a wider read
The same news-driven shape published for four more categories today shows the same range rather than a fixed rule. Fintech splits its top eight roughly evenly between editorial (Fintechfutures.com, Medium), vendor (Stripe.com, Landbase.com, Airwallex.com) and analyst sources (Deloitte.com, Pwc.com). Healthcare Services leans academic and editorial: NIH.gov and Fiercehealthcare.com hold the top two slots, with Healthcaredive.com also ranked in the top eight. Enterprise Software leans vendor and community, the way Cybersecurity does: LinkedIn, Zylo.com, Salesforce.com and Bettercloud.com fill five of the top eight, with only Saastr.com editorial. None of these four categories was read on the buying shapes for this brief; the news-driven read is the one comparable measure published across all seven.
What this means for the pitch list
"Editorial placements build AI citation authority" is not a portfolio-wide rule this Index supports. It is true, specifically and checkably, in categories like HR & Talent, and it is false in the same specific, checkable sense in Cybersecurity, where the citation surface for buying decisions is vendor-owned pages, tool marketplaces and community platforms rather than the trade press. A pitch list built for one category and reused for the next carries an assumption that the data does not support. The category-and-shape pair is the unit to check before the placement is booked, not the category alone and not "editorial coverage" as a single line item.
AuthorityTech builds earned-media programs against this measurement, reading the buying shape's own leaderboard for the client's category before the pitch list is drawn, rather than assuming one playbook transfers.
Method and sources
Every rank, rate and source-role label above is read from the segment's own public leaderboard page on the Machine Relations Index, release mri_score_v2.0+2026-09-28+054b584266b8. Six answer engines report into the window: ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Google AI Mode, Google AI Overviews and Perplexity. A rank is read from the segment's own published leaderboard order, never re-derived by re-sorting. This brief did not read the remaining three buyer shapes (how buyers choose, is it worth it, problem-first research) for either category; a wider read may change the top-6 counts on those shapes.
