Adobe's 2026 AI and Digital Trends survey landed this month with a number that should make you rethink your content calendar: one in four customers now uses AI platforms as their primary source when they search for information, evaluate products, or find recommendations. That's ahead of brand websites and online reviews.
The same survey found that in the last two years, people consumed 72% more reviews and testimonials and 69% more influencer content before making a purchase. They're not skipping due diligence. They're doing it faster, through AI, and AI is summarizing what everyone else has already said about you.
That's the actual game. AI doesn't form opinions about your brand from your website. It summarizes the coverage ecosystem around your brand. And most operators are building content for the wrong layer of that ecosystem.
What AI Actually Pulls From
John Box, CEO of Meltwater, said something direct in a recent interview: "A few months ago, visibility in LLMs was maybe 1 in 10 brand conversations. Today it's 9 in 10."
When his team audits brands for AI presence, the first question isn't "do you have a blog?" It's "what does the citation graph around your brand look like?" What articles reference you? What reports quote you? What surveys cite your data?
Research by Deloitte and Semrush shows that AI-driven results now index a different content hierarchy than traditional search. The tier that performs best isn't your owned blog or your social posts — it's third-party coverage that references your brand as a source of evidence.
And there's a specific type of coverage that outperforms everything else: coverage that cites your data.
Why Research Reports Compound (And Blog Posts Don't)
Here's the mechanics. When you publish a blog post, it gets crawled, indexed, and competes against thousands of similar pages. AI engines pick it up if your domain authority clears a threshold and your page structure passes basic technical checks. But the shelf life is short. As newer content accumulates, your post gets de-prioritized.
When you publish original research — a benchmark survey, a proprietary dataset, a state-of-the-industry report — something different happens:

The Playbook: What to Build and How
Not all research assets are equal. Here's what makes one citation-worthy versus one that gets ignored:
What to research:
- Category-level benchmarks. What does your industry pay, experience, or struggle with? Operators in your market will share their own data for a comparison benchmark. "State of [Your Category]" is a search surface in AI answers.
- Buyer behavior data. Survey your customers or prospects on a specific behavior that's changing. Freshness matters: AI citation behavior strongly favors metadata that shows recent publication dates. A survey from six months ago outperforms a blog post from last week in most citation tests.
- Prediction tracking. Commit to an annual data point — a specific metric you'll track year over year. Once analysts start citing your data for trend analysis, you're in the citation network permanently.
What makes it citation-worthy:
The GEO-16 research framework, which analyzed 1,702 AI citations across Brave, Google AI Overviews, and Perplexity, found that the strongest predictors of citation are metadata freshness, semantic structure, and structured data. Your report needs a visible publication date, clean section hierarchy, and JSON-LD schema so AI engines can parse it cleanly. A well-structured 800-word research summary beats a 4,000-word content dump.
How to distribute it:
The goal is to get the research cited by journalists before you publish it on your own site. That sequence matters. A press release through a distribution service (PR Newswire, Business Wire) with the key findings gets AI-indexed independently. Trade journalist coverage in vertical publications converts coverage into durable citation nodes. And if you can get an analyst to reference it, even in a blog post, you've added a tier-1 signal.
One metric the WSJ's GEO analysis flagged as critical: citation velocity. Not how many citations you have, but how fast new ones are accumulating. A research report that gets covered in five publications over 30 days trains AI engines to treat your brand as an active source of expertise. Coverage that happened 18 months ago and stopped doesn't.

A data-backed prediction about where your category is heading, timed for Q1 when journalists are writing trend pieces: yes.
The brands that are building consistent AI presence right now aren't just buying coverage — they're building assets that make coverage easier for journalists to produce. That's a different content strategy than most teams are running.
