Experian Wins Finance Citations, Family Software Misses
Experian ranks in the top 10 of 5 of 6 Consumer Finance citation shapes. The best vendor-owned rank across Family Software's six shapes is 50th.
Experian Wins Finance Citations, Family Software Misses
Today's Machine Relations Index crosses the evidence floor on three categories that had zero owned pages on any of AuthorityTech's, Paralax's, Para Labs', Jaxon's or Christian's lanes until this brief: Consumer Finance, Education & Training, and Family Software, each with all six buyer-question shapes published at 100 to 138 observed runs over 7 dates. Reading the three side by side answers a question a marketing leader in any of them is already asking: does my own site's content stand a chance of getting cited, or is that budget better spent earning coverage elsewhere?

The answer is not the same in all three, and the gap between the best and worst case is wide enough to change a plan.
Where a vendor's own domain actually ranks
Release mri_score_v2.0+2026-09-26+2b779408cfda, generated 2026-09-26, window 2026-05-10 to 2026-09-26. Reading every row the Machine Relations Index labels "Vendor-owned source" across all six buyer-question shapes in each category — Consumer Finance, Education & Training, and Family Software:
| Category | Vendor-owned rows / 600 | Best vendor rank | Shapes with a vendor-owned row |
|---|---|---|---|
| Consumer Finance | 6 | Experian, #3 (Problem-first, 21.97%) | 5 of 6 |
| Education & Training | 14 | Rippling, #13 (Best tools, 10.38%) | 4 of 6 |
| Family Software | 3 | Microsoft, #53 (Problem-first, 2.78%) | 3 of 6 |
Experian is the whole story in Consumer Finance. It is the only vendor-owned domain that ranks at all, and it ranks high: #5 on how buyers choose (21.21%), #3 on problem-first research (21.97%), #5 on top lists (23.48%), #9 on best tools (18.18%) and #10 on is it worth it (8.33%). It is absent only from the head-to-head shape. One company's own site is answering five of the six questions a Consumer Finance buyer asks an AI engine — a result that lines up with Experian's own product move into ChatGPT-based loan shopping earlier this year.
Family Software runs the other direction. Across all six shapes, the highest a vendor-owned domain climbs is 53rd (Microsoft, problem-first) and 63rd (Microsoft, how buyers choose); Zendesk reaches 50th on top lists at 3.70%. Three of the six shapes — best tools, is it worth it, and head to head — carry no vendor-owned row in their top 100 at all. A vendor's own domain is a measurable but marginal source here, never a contender for the questions that decide a purchase.
Education & Training's classification wrinkle
Education & Training's own number — 14 vendor-owned rows, the highest of the three — understates what is actually happening, for the same reason a Deep Tech & Hardware reading found this week: the Index's automated classifier files some company sites under "Other observed source," not "Vendor-owned source." Two learning-platform vendors, D2L and Docebo, rank in the top 10 of every one of the category's six shapes under that "other observed" label — D2L at #2 on best tools (18.87%) and #2 on top lists (14.00%), Docebo at #6 on problem-first research (8.00%) and #9 on best tools (13.21%). Add those two domains to the true vendor-owned rows (Rippling, Recruiters LineUp, Microsoft, Monday.com, Chargebee) and company sites hold a top-10 slot in five of Education & Training's six shapes — closer to Consumer Finance's pattern than the category's own labeled count suggests.
What this changes for a marketing plan
If you sell into Consumer Finance, your own product and content pages are already a live citation channel for four of the five most decision-relevant shapes. Experian's result did not come from a single lucky placement; it holds across how-buyers-choose, problem-first, top-list and is-it-worth-it questions. A plan that assumes citation in this category has to be earned through press alone is leaving a channel unused that a competitor is already winning.
If you sell family software — parental controls, screen-time tools, family organization apps — the vendor's-own-site channel is close to a dead end for the questions that decide a purchase. Reddit, Forbes, PCMag, TechRadar and AllAboutCookies.org fill the top ranks across all six shapes instead. Budget aimed at your own product pages competing for these questions is budget aimed at a channel the current release shows is not converting into citations; earned coverage in the outlets already winning the category is the channel with a demonstrated path.
If you sell learning and training software, check which bucket your own domain would fall into before reading the 14-row count as the ceiling. D2L and Docebo prove a learning-platform vendor's own site can hold a top-3 slot on the shapes buyers use to shortlist tools, even though the Index's own taxonomy does not label them "vendor-owned." The classification label is not the test that matters; the rank is.
Both readings hold only for the buyer-question shapes measured here, not for news-driven citations in any of the three categories, and only as long as this release's ranking holds — check the current release before repeating either number.
Method
Data: Machine Relations Index v2, release mri_score_v2.0+2026-09-26+2b779408cfda, window 2026-05-10 to 2026-09-26, six answer engines (ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Google AI Mode, Google AI Overviews, Perplexity). Segments require at least 10 observed answer runs across at least 7 distinct run dates before publishing a rate; all three categories here clear that floor on all six shapes at 100 to 138 runs each. Figures are read directly from the published Consumer Finance, Education & Training and Family Software category-and-shape pages; source-role labels are the Index's own declared taxonomy, and the D2L/Docebo classification note above is a read of that taxonomy's own boundary, not a correction of the Index. AuthorityTech applies Machine Relations' research; it is not our product.
