When your brand shows up in a Google AI Overview, paid CTR on that query is 91% higher than when it doesn't. That comes from a Seer Interactive study tracking 42 client organizations, 3,119 search terms, and 25.1 million impressions through Q3 2025. Seer adds the honest caveat that they can't prove citation causes higher CTR — brands with stronger baseline authority are also more likely to be cited. But the correlation holds consistently across three quarters of live data, and the numbers are specific enough to matter.

That gap is either capturing or missing your budget right now. Most teams are missing it, and when they find out, they brief their content team. More schema markup. More authoritative-looking content. None of it closes the gap, because the mechanism driving AI citations doesn't run through your blog.

What AI is actually reading

Zero-click searches now account for over 27% of US Google queries, up from 24% a year earlier, according to SparkToro and Datos data from Q1 2025. Fewer clicks are reaching any brand. The brands that are getting found are the ones AI is actively recommending, not just ranking.

Before redesigning your content strategy around that, check what's going into AI answers in the first place.

Muck Rack tracked AI citation behavior in their Generative Pulse study and found that when citations are enabled in AI prompts, more than 95% of links cited come from non-paid sources. Of those, 85% are earned media. More than 27% come directly from news articles and journalism. Outlets appearing most frequently include Reuters, Axios, the Financial Times, AP, Forbes, and NPR.

Pick the five queries your buyers are most likely to run when evaluating your category. Note whether your brand appears, and more importantly, which sources the AI is pulling from when your competitors show up and you don't.

The third step is the uncomfortable one: compare your existing editorial placement footprint against those citation sources. Where have you actually been covered, in bylines, quotes, and features? Cross-reference that list against what's driving AI citations. The delta is the problem you're actually solving.

Most operators who run this find the same thing. They have placements in trade publications that are highly relevant to their industry but rarely cited by AI engines. Niche trade press often doesn't make the cut regardless of how well-targeted it is for human buyers.

The shortcut that makes things worse

When this lands, the instinct is to start pitching more aggressively. More outreach, higher volume.
