Profound Review and Alternatives for AI Visibility in 2026

Profound evaluated on data accuracy, model coverage, agent analytics, prompt volume and citation analysis, with Index data on how often AI answers name it.

Short answer: Profound is the AI visibility platform AI engines themselves name most often. In the Machine Relations Index answer ledger, Gemini, Claude, Perplexity and ChatGPT named Profound in 80 of 127 answers (63.0%) to "best AI visibility tool" questions, more than any other vendor. Buy it if you need enterprise-grade prompt tracking, server-log agent analytics and prompt-volume research in one contract. Look at alternatives if you need transparent self-serve pricing, a tool inside an SEO suite you already run, or if your real gap is the third-party coverage that decides who gets recommended.

This is an evaluation built on citation data, not the feature grid. Every vendor in this category publishes a feature grid. What a buyer cannot get from a grid is how the product and its maker actually show up in the answers engines give to buyers like you. The Machine Relations Index measures that daily across six AI engines, and it is the evidence under each heading below.

If you are comparing enterprise suites rather than point tools, read our BrightEdge AI visibility review and the Conductor alternatives guide. This page answers one question: should you buy Profound, and if not, what instead?

Key numbers

  • Named most. Across 792 answers from four engines to AI-visibility buyer questions, Profound was named in 162 (20.5%). Semrush was next at 134 (16.9%), then Peec at 117 (14.8%).
  • Strongest on lists. Profound's own site ranks 2nd of 558 cited sources on "top AI visibility tools" questions and 10th of 421 on "best tools" questions.
  • Weaker on evaluation. On "is it worth it" questions the same site ranks 96th of 529. Buyers asking whether to pay are reading other people's pages.
  • Named off other people's pages. In 152 answers that named Profound and cited any source, 114 (75.0%) cited only sites other than Profound's own.
  • Uneven by engine. Gemini named Profound in 77 of 199 answers (38.7%). ChatGPT named it in 13 of 195 (6.7%).
  • Scale. Profound announced a $180 million Series D at a $1.8 billion valuation on September 15, 2026, co-led by Sequoia Capital and Kleiner Perkins, and says it serves more than 1,000 enterprise brands.

What the citation data says about Profound

The Index release used here is mri_score_v2.0+2026-09-28+054b584266b8, covering 17,868 monitored answer runs across ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Google AI Mode, Google AI Overviews and Perplexity from May 10 to September 28, 2026. Profound's domain, tryprofound.com, was cited in 60 of those runs, which puts it at rank 192 of 24,639 observed domains. Almost all of that comes from one category, AI Visibility and GEO, and it varies sharply by the kind of question the buyer asks.

Buyer question shapeCited runsObserved runsCitation rateStanding among cited sources

Is it worth it41662.41%96th of 529
Problem-first research21611.24%158th of 505

Read that table as a funnel. Profound's own content is what engines reach for when a buyer asks for a list. When the buyer moves to "how do I choose" and "is it worth the money," engines cite YouTube, Reddit, HubSpot and smaller agency and vendor sites instead. That is not a flaw in Profound's content. When the buyer is deciding whether to pay, the seller's own page is rarely the one an engine reaches for.

The second cut comes from the Index answer ledger, which records the text of each answer as well as its sources. We counted how often each vendor's name appears in the answer text itself, on the four engines whose captured answers are clean prose.

On this evidence Profound owns the category's shortlist. The name match is clean: the capitalized word "Profound" appeared in 0 of 10,118 answers from the same engines and window in every other category, so the count is the vendor and not the adjective.

Data accuracy

Profound says it runs structured prompts across AI platforms and analyses where and how a brand appears, tracking citations, sentiment, ranking and competitive presence, per its pricing page FAQ. That is the standard method in this category, and it is sound at the prompt level. An independent hands-on review rated its prompt-level data accurate and as transparent as most tools in the market.

The accuracy risk sits one layer up, in how raw answers become a score. Two traps are worth testing in any demo:

  1. Source labels read as mentions. On Google AI Mode and AI Overviews the captured answer text interleaves Google's own source chips with the prose. A tracker that matches brand names on that raw text will count names the answer never wrote. The Machine Relations Index strips that layer before counting a name, which is why the vendor-naming table above uses the four chat engines only.
  2. Cited and named merged into one number. Profound's own record shows why this matters: of the 162 answers that named Profound, 38 cited Profound's own site. Being named and being cited are different outcomes with different causes.

Ask Profound to export fifty raw answers behind one visibility score and reconcile them yourself.

Model coverage

On Enterprise, Profound lists capability for nine answer engines: ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Mode, Gemini, Microsoft Copilot, DeepSeek, Anthropic Claude, Google AI Overviews and Exa Search. The free Trial covers ChatGPT, Gemini and Google AI Overviews, 50 prompts a day for seven days. Copilot matters more than most buyers assume, because Microsoft grounds Copilot's web answers through Bing. Confirm Copilot is in your contract, not only on the capability list.

The citation data adds a reason to insist on per-engine reporting. Engines treat the same vendor very differently:

EngineAnswers naming ProfoundAnswers readShare
Gemini7719938.7%
Claude4119920.6%
Perplexity3119915.6%
ChatGPT131956.7%

A blended visibility number averages those away. Your own brand will have a spread like this too, and the engine your buyers use most may be the one where you are weakest.

Agent analytics

This is where Profound is most clearly ahead. Agent Analytics reads server logs through integrations with Akamai, AWS, Cloudflare, Fastly, Google Cloud, Netlify, Vercel and WordPress rather than a JavaScript tag, separates verified AI bots from spoofed crawlers, and attributes human visits that arrive from AI search. It also benchmarks page-level citation performance against more than two million pages in Profound's network.

Log-based measurement is the right design. AI crawlers are several distinct agents with distinct rules: OpenAI ties OAI-SearchBot access to inclusion in ChatGPT search summaries, Anthropic documents separate agents for training, user retrieval and search indexing, and Cloudflare classifies AI crawlers, AI search bots and user-directed assistants as different categories. A tool that reports one "AI traffic" line hides that. The trade-off is setup: the analytics depend on a CDN or log integration your engineering team has to approve.

LLM optimization

Profound has moved from dashboard to doer. Its AI Marketer rewrites pages it judges to be losing citations and stages them in your CMS, drafts new pages for unanswered questions, writes sponsored-answer creative, and drafts correction requests to publishers repeating outdated facts. Agents run on credits, and the credit volume is set in the Enterprise contract.

That is useful work, and it is aimed mostly at pages you own. Profound's own record is the caution: in 114 of the 152 answers that named Profound while citing sources, the pages the engine cited were somebody else's. The most frequent were seranking.com (39 answers), youtube.com (38), therankmasters.com (37), dageno.ai (30) and reddit.com (29). Owned-page optimization moves the minority channel. Ask the vendor which share of your own recommendations comes from pages you control before you buy credits to rewrite them.

Prompt volume

Prompt Volumes is Profound's most distinctive dataset: keyword and topic volumes drawn from what Profound describes as more than 1.5 billion real AI conversations, with intent classification and filters by platform, age range and income. For choosing which prompts to track, it is better than guessing from Google keyword volume.

Treat the volumes as a panel estimate, the way you treat any clickstream data. Ask where the conversations come from, how the panel is recruited, and how the figures are projected to platform totals. Then check the priority it produces against your own Search Console and Bing data.

Citation analysis

Profound's citation analysis is strong: sources cited across answers, co-citation mapping that shows which competitors appear beside you, and uncited-prompt detection that finds questions where a competitor's page is cited and yours is not. History, CSV and JSON export, and API access come with the Enterprise plan.

The analysis tells you which third-party pages engines trust in your category. Acting on that list is a different job, covered in the last section.

Metrics

Profound reports visibility score, share of voice, sentiment, position and citations by platform. Those are the right families. The test is whether each is reported per engine and whether citation and naming stay separate. We have shown elsewhere that a rising citation count does not prove your brand is named, and Profound's own record above is a live example of the gap running the other way: named far more often than cited.

Pricing

Per Profound's pricing page, read on September 29, 2026, there are two brand plans. Trial is free with limited AI Marketer credits, 50 prompts daily for seven days on three engines. Enterprise is custom: tailored prompt tracking, up to nine engines, full history, CSV and JSON exports, API, SSO and SAML, and dedicated support. An agency plan carries 400 credits per client workspace per month. On G2, Profound holds 4.5 out of 5 across more than a thousand reviews; the recurring criticisms are price relative to other tools, a learning curve, and reporting customization.

Where Profound is strong

  • Category leadership that engines recognise. The naming data above is the clearest evidence we can offer of a vendor's standing, and Profound leads it.
  • Breadth of engines on the Enterprise plan, including Copilot, DeepSeek and Exa.
  • Agent analytics built on logs, with bot verification.
  • A proprietary prompt-volume dataset at a scale competitors are still building.
  • Capital and momentum: TechCrunch reported the Series D came less than seven months after a $96 million Series C.

Profound alternatives and competitors

The vendors below are the ones AI engines name alongside Profound, ordered by how often the Index ledger found them named in answers to AI-visibility questions.

AlternativeNamed in answers, of 792Best fit
Semrush AI Toolkit134Teams that want AI visibility inside the SEO suite they already run
Peec AI117Teams that want published self-serve pricing, from $95 a month for 50 prompts
Otterly.AI107Monitoring-first buyers who want simple reporting
Ahrefs Brand Radar84Teams already on Ahrefs for links and content research
Scrunch39Brands that want monitoring plus agent-facing pages and AI traffic analysis
Conductor16Enterprise SEO programs that want AI reporting in the same workflow
BrightEdge15Enterprise SEO teams that need source and agent diagnostics
Evertune10Brands that want AI visibility and ChatGPT advertising in one platform

Where the named count is low, the vendor may still be the right fit; it means engines are less likely to put it on a buyer's shortlist unprompted. For the enterprise suites in depth, see the BrightEdge review, the BrightEdge vs Semrush comparison and the Semrush alternatives guide.

Who should buy Profound

  • An enterprise marketing team that needs daily prompt tracking across most engines and will use the API.
  • A site large enough that crawler behaviour and AI referral traffic justify a log integration.
  • A team with content capacity, where agents that draft and stage work save real hours.

Who should look elsewhere

  • Teams that need a published self-serve price before a sales call.
  • Teams that want AI visibility as one tab inside an existing SEO suite.
  • Anyone expecting the software to put them on the lists engines read. Profound can show you those lists; the pages on them belong to other people.

Where earned media still fits

Profound's own numbers make the case better than we could. The most-named vendor in its category is named, three times out of four, while the engine cites someone else's page. The pages doing that work were roundups, reviews, videos and community threads written by people who are not Profound. Engines put a vendor on the shortlist when other credible sites already count it in the category.

The same mechanism decides whether your brand is recommended. A tracker, Profound included, measures that outcome and can tell you which third-party sources your category runs on. Getting your company into those sources is earned media: coverage in the publications and reviews engines already cite. Machine Relations is the discipline that treats that as one system, measured by the Machine Relations Index. AuthorityTech is the earned-media practice that applies it for clients.

Buy the measurement tool that fits your team. Then fund the part of the answer the tool can only watch.

Sources and method

Citation standings come from Machine Relations Index release mri_score_v2.0+2026-09-28+054b584266b8, window May 10 to September 28, 2026, read from the tryprofound.com profile and the six AI Visibility and GEO segment pages. Vendor-naming counts come from the same panel's answer ledger: the 792 successful answers from ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Perplexity to publicly scored AI Visibility and GEO questions in the same window, with Markdown links, URLs and bare domain strings removed before matching each vendor name. Google AI Mode and AI Overviews were excluded from name matching because their captured text includes source labels. The ledger reproduces the release exactly on this segment: 142 best-tools runs and 21 citing tryprofound.com, matching the published page. Vendor capabilities and pricing were read on September 29, 2026 from Profound's pricing page, Prompt Volumes and Agent Analytics pages, and its Series D announcement. A citation or a name in an answer is an observed outcome; it does not show what caused it.
