Your Case Studies Are Getting Ignored by AI Search. Here's the Exact Fix.
B2B buyers now use AI tools as their primary research source. Your existing case studies probably won't get cited — not because the results are weak, but because the format is wrong.
You've spent months — sometimes years — building a case study library. Client results. Named outcomes. Specific numbers. Good stuff, by any reasonable standard.
And none of it is showing up in AI search.
When a B2B buyer asks ChatGPT or Perplexity who the best option is in your category, your case studies aren't being cited. Your PDF deck isn't being read. The testimonial page on your website might as well not exist.
This isn't a content quality problem. It's a format problem — and it's fixable in a few hours per asset, not months.
Why your case studies don't get cited
Forrester's January 2026 research on B2B buyer behavior confirmed what a lot of operators have been sensing: AI tools are now the single most cited meaningful interaction type in the B2B buying process. Business buyers name generative AI ahead of vendor websites, product experts, and sales in terms of where they go first for research. 1
What Forrester also found, separately, is that AI systems favor "original, expert-driven, human-authored material" — and that customer success stories, specifically, represent exactly the kind of third-party evidence these systems prioritize. 2
Here's the problem: almost every B2B case study is formatted for human skimming, not machine extraction.
Standard case study format looks like this:
- Company overview paragraph
- Challenge narrative
- Solution description (usually vague)
- Quote from the client
- Results section (often buried at the bottom)
AI systems can't reliably extract a citable claim from that structure. They need the result stated as a direct, standalone sentence near the top — not teased in a narrative arc that ends on page three of the PDF.
The GEO-16 framework from Kumar et al., published in September 2025, audited over 1,700 citations across Brave, Google AI Overviews, and Perplexity and found that page quality score — driven largely by semantic structure, metadata freshness, and structured data — predicted citation with an odds ratio of 4.2. Pages scoring above 0.70 on their quality index hit a 78% cross-engine citation rate. Pages with buried results and narrative-first structure scored low. 3
Your case studies are probably narrative-first. That's why they don't get cited.
The three-part reformat (do this before creating anything new)
Before you build a single new case study, fix what you have. This is where the leverage is.
1. Lead with the result as a direct statement
The first sentence of every case study needs to be a standalone citable claim. Not "the company was struggling with X." The result.
Wrong: "Acme Corp came to us struggling with fragmented customer data and inconsistent outreach."
Right: "Acme Corp reduced customer acquisition cost by 34% in 90 days by consolidating data and restructuring outbound sequences."
That second version is what an AI system extracts and cites. The first version gets skipped. Make the result unmissable in the first 60 words — that's the extraction window AI systems use when pulling answer blocks from pages.
2. Add a structured results table
Research from the Princeton/Georgia Tech GEO paper consistently shows tables are cited at significantly higher rates than unstructured prose. 4 A simple table with metric, baseline, and result columns does two things: it's instantly extractable by AI systems, and it's actually more convincing to human readers too.

This format is machine-readable. A case study buried in prose paragraphs is not.
3. Add FAQPage schema markup
Forrester's research on AEO strategy specifically calls out structured data as a lever for visibility in AI-generated outputs. 2 FAQPage schema on case study pages converts your results into a question-and-answer format that AI systems can pull directly.
The questions don't have to be complex. "What results did [Client] achieve?" answered with a concise, specific response is enough. Each Q&A block becomes a discrete citable unit.
Most marketing teams skip schema markup on case studies because it feels like an IT request. It's not — it's a JSON-LD block you can add to the page <head> directly. Here's the template:

One thing most teams get wrong about customer language
The Forrester research is specific about this: AI systems prioritize content that uses the language buyers actually use, not the language your internal team uses. 2
Your case studies probably describe your solution in the terms your product team uses internally. Your buyers are searching in completely different terms.
Run your top five case studies through a quick audit: does the language in the results section match the queries your ICP would actually type into ChatGPT or Perplexity? If your buyer searches "how to fix churn in SaaS onboarding" and your case study describes "implementing a lifecycle engagement framework," there's a gap. AI systems can't bridge that gap for you. You have to close it in the copy.
This isn't about dumbing things down. It's about describing the same outcome in the words a peer-level operator would use when explaining the problem to their own team.
Where to publish reformatted case studies
This matters more than most teams realize. The Muck Rack Generative Pulse analysis of over one million AI prompts found that 82% of links cited by AI engines came from earned media — not brand-owned content. 5
Your case studies on your own website are harder for AI systems to cite with confidence than case studies placed in third-party publications. That's the structural problem with the "case study library on our website" model.
The practical fix: republish your reformatted case studies in outlets where AI engines already cite content in your category. Trade publications, industry-specific sites, or media that covers your vertical. Keep the canonical URL on your site, but create a version for third-party placement that uses the same structured format.
The case study becomes an earned media asset, not just a website page. That's when it starts generating citations.

What makes a reformatted case study get cited isn't magic — it's earned credibility passing through a publication AI systems already trust.

Your case studies, in the right format, placed in the right publications, are exactly the kind of third-party evidence that feeds that mechanism. The results are real. The client outcomes are real. The only thing missing is the structure that lets AI systems extract and cite them.
Fix the format. Place it somewhere earned. The citations follow.
