A global study just graded 1,735 executives on AI readiness. Not one question asked whether their buyers' AI tools know they exist.

A new global study surveyed 1,735 executives on AI readiness. The Association of International Certified Professional Accountants (AICPA-CIMA), in partnership with NC State University's Enterprise Risk Management Initiative, measured talent readiness, governance, competitive dynamics, board-level attention, regulatory preparedness, and risk profiles across eight industries and eight global regions. It's the largest executive AI readiness study published in 2026.

Only 24 to 27 percent of organizations have adequate AI talent, IT readiness, or regulatory preparedness. North America trails emerging markets: just 18 to 22 percent of North American executives report meaningful AI-driven strategic impact, compared to 36 to 42 percent in South Africa, South Asia, and Southeast Asia. Among the 73 percent of "AI-Transformed" organizations claiming strategic advantage, the gains trace back to one thing: early movers who built the advantage through internal process transformation.

Not one question in the study asked whether their buyers' AI tools know they exist.

The dimension every AI readiness framework misses.

While 1,735 executives were being tested on their internal AI capabilities, Zscaler's ThreatLabz 2026 AI Security Report was logging something different: nearly one trillion AI and machine learning transactions in 2025. AI/ML activity grew 83 percent year-over-year across more than 3,400 applications, a count that quadrupled in twelve months. Data transfers to AI platforms hit 18,000 terabytes, up 93 percent. AI is not a pilot program. It's core operational infrastructure running at industrial scale across every department in every serious organization.

Here's what that number means in practice: those transactions go both ways.

Your employees use AI to run queries, draft documents, and evaluate options. Your prospects' employees are doing the same — including researching your company. When a VP of Operations at a Fortune 500 asks ChatGPT or Perplexity "what are the top platforms for [your category]," that's one of those trillion queries. An answer comes back. That answer isn't pulled from your homepage, your case studies, or your press room. It's recalled from what AI systems have already indexed from publications they treat as authoritative.

The AICPA study, thorough as it is, didn't measure that exposure. Neither does any other AI readiness framework I've seen.

The visible layer versus the structural work.

A Forbes contributor piece on enterprise AI's "coordination theater" made the case that what most companies call AI transformation is elaborate performance — governance committees, efficiency dashboards, restructuring announcements — while the structural work remains undone. The visible, reportable activity gets optimized. The hard foundational work doesn't get started.

The same dynamic plays out in AI visibility strategy.

Companies add FAQ schema to their websites. They audit their content for answer-engine keywords. They prompt-test ChatGPT to see what surfaces when they type their company name. This is the visible layer — easy to report on in a quarterly deck, easy to check off a list. The structural work is earning editorial placements in publications that AI engines treat as credible sources, building citation infrastructure that compounds over years. That work is harder to report on and harder to start.

The result is that most companies have no clear picture of what AI systems say about them when a buyer is running vendor research. And if they checked once, they haven't verified it across the platforms their buyers actually use, for the use cases those buyers are asking about.

The competitive anxiety is pointed at the wrong target.

The AICPA study found that 54 percent of AI-forward organizations worry their competitors will leverage AI more effectively than they will. That concern is real. But the study measured it in terms of internal capability gaps: who has better AI talent, better infrastructure, better governance.

The more immediate competition isn't for internal AI tooling. It's for position in the AI answers your buyers are already reading.

AI agents don't browse vendor websites. They recall from indexed sources. The shortlist a buyer sees in ChatGPT or Perplexity was shaped months or years earlier, by what those systems determined was credible. A placement in Harvard Business Review, TechCrunch, or Forbes by a working journalist carries citation weight in those systems that no homepage redesign or content audit replicates.

That's the gap the AICPA study didn't measure. It's also the gap that shows up on the pipeline report as deals that never started.

What Machine Relations actually fixes.
