Step 1 — The extraction test
Take your three most important pages: homepage, product or service page, and company or about page. Paste each one into ChatGPT with this prompt: "Summarize what this company does, who it serves, and what makes it different from competitors. Be specific."
Compare the output to how you actually describe yourself. If the AI returned something generic or wrong, the content failed. The most common failure modes: no clear entity definition in the first 100 words, key differentiators buried below the fold, and benefit language too abstract for the AI to categorize you accurately.
The fix isn't rewriting the page for AI. It's front-loading a self-contained answer block. State who you are, what you do, and who you serve in the first paragraph, in plain language. AI agents read and weight first paragraphs heavily.

Step 2 — The comparative query test
Run "best [your category] tools 2026" and "[your company] vs [top competitor]" on ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI in the same session. Each platform pulls from a different source mix:

Check whether you appear, in what position, and what specific language the model uses. Don't just look for your name. Check the description. Step 3 — The source audit
For any category query where you should appear but don't, check which sources the AI is pulling from. For most B2B categories, it's a short list: TechCrunch, Forbes, relevant trade outlets, and analyst reports.
