Everything above is the company's description of its own service. A services firm has no product spec to check it against, which is precisely why the useful diligence question is about people and evidence — who holds the vCISO seat on your account, and what audits they have taken to completion — rather than about the framework list, which every firm in the category can recite.

## The distinction that actually matters here

The confusing part of this category is that two different things are sold under adjacent language. Compliance automation platforms — Vanta and Drata among them — give you software that collects evidence and monitors controls continuously; you still supply the judgment and the person who owns the outcome. A fractional security team supplies the judgment and the owner, and usually runs on top of one of those platforms rather than instead of it.

A buyer who compares the two on price is comparing a licence to a headcount and will get the wrong answer. The question that separates them is whether the gap is tooling or whether it is that nobody on staff can sign off on a security architecture decision.
